Mike Shanahan: Kirk Cousins ‘will have all the reps in the offseason’

rgiiihoops313aWill Robert Griffin III be ready for Week 1 of the 2013 season?

That’s the question Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan, who is in Phoenix for NFL owners meetings, has been asked no fewer than 1,287 times since RGIII’s knee surgery. The most recent time was by Kimberly Jones of the NFL Network, and here’s what he had to say.

“He is ahead. But it’s a process. It takes time,” he told Jones. “Anytime you deal with that knee, you’re dealing with ligaments. You can get the muscles stronger around it, but it takes some time. And Robert will do it the right way, and we’ll find out in July exactly where he’s at. You’re hoping he’s ready, but you can’t plan for him to be ready.”

The plan to prepare for him to not be ready includes Kirk Cousins playing the lead role for a while.

“Kirk Cousins will work at the quarterback position and he’ll have all the reps in the offseason,” Shanahan continued. “Robert will have a lot of reps, but it will all be mental. He’ll know when he’s 100 percent. He’ll know what he can do on the football field, what he can do through practices, and he will not come back until he’s 100 percent.”

So we’re letting RGIII decide that he’s healthy enough to play? We’re cool with that? Okay, just checking.

As for Washington’s beloved quarterback, in addition to rehabbing his knee, he’s spending his offseason getting pedicures, making friends with The Iron Sheik and writing inspirational poems.
