Kurt Suzuki’s bonsai tree

Nats catcher Kurt Suzuki was recently given a bonsai tree by teammates Ian Desmond and Ross Detwiler. The meaning of the tree, he said, was peace, tranquility and strength.

It was Hawaii native Suzuki’s first-ever bonsai tree, which he was proudly caring for before Monday’s home opener. During batting practice, he placed the small, book-sized tree on the bench in the dugout. “Trying to get a little sun,” he said.

James Wagner joined the Post in August 2010 and, prior to covering the Nationals, covered high school sports across the region.
