Papa John’s introduced a Nationals-themed promotion last season, offering half-priced orders the day after the Nats won while scoring at least five runs.
Turned out this wasn’t exactly a rare occasion. The Nats won while scoring at least five runs a whopping 62 times in 2012, nearly 40 percent of their games. And plenty of people took advantage of the cheap pizza.
“We do lose money on winning days, on big days,” a Papa John’s official told Washingtonian last fall, “but there’s huge transaction growth. There are days when we see a 50 to 70 percent increase in orders.”
This year, though, expect far fewer 50-percent off days. As some folks on Twitter and Reddit noticed, the deal now only works when the Nats win while scoring at least seven runs.
How much of a difference do those two runs represent? In 2012, the Nats won while scoring either 5 or 6 runs 26 times — 42 percent of the times the Papa John’s offer was in place.
Already this season, the difference has been felt in Washington bellies, or at least in Washington pocketbooks. The Nats have two wins that would have qualified under the old rules, but just one win that qualifies under the new rules. This led to some confused customers after a 6-1 win over the Marlins.
Did Papa John’s cancel the #Nats promo, for 50% off after they win and score 5 or more runs? Promo code NATS50 doesn’t work!! BOOOOOOO!!!
