Gary Williams mock draft has the Wizards taking Alex Len

Near as I can tell, most Wizards fans — or at least, most Wizards fans who hang out on the internet — believe their favorite team should target either Otto Porter or Anthony Bennett with their third overall pick in next month’s draft.

Also, near as I can tell, most Wizards fans — or at least, most Wizards fans who hang out on the internet — would rather lick the fur on G-Wiz’s feet than see their favorite team take Maryland’s Alex Len.

Indeed, Comcast SportsNet’s Ben Standig — who has the Wizards taking Bennett — provided a handy round-up of expert mock drafts. Porter and Bennett are universally the two names mentioned.

But Gary Williams mock drafts to the beat of his own intense drums, and he has a different opinion.

“The Wizards have to make a decision, whether to go big or get the best player that’s still there,” he told Comcast SportsNet’s Chick Hernandez, when running down his top five picks. “And there’s a lot of really good 6-7, 6-8 guard-type players. I think the local guy, Alex Len, gives you a chance to have an outstanding big man for the future. It might not be this year, especially coming off the operation. The Bobcats, I think Otto Porter’s too good to go past four. I just think he can add something to nay team because of his intensity, his ability to play a couple positions. And then fifth, I’d like to see Victor Oladipo get a shot to play, and I think he needs to go into a wide-open system. He’d be great at a Golden State or places like that. As long as he can get up and down the court he’s gonna be a great player in the NBA.”

(Alex Prewitt has a roundup of Len-related mock drafts. Five different teams are mentioned, ranging from No. 4 to No. 10. The Wizards didn’t make the cut.)

Later, Hernandez asked for a summary of Washington’s options.

“Well there’s three options: go big, go a little smaller, or trade it and hopefully get two veteran players that might be able to take you to the playoffs this year,” Williams said. “Because they’ve got some pieces now, but if they can add pieces, they’ve got a good shot to make a run at the playoffs.”

And if they add Len, they’ve got a good shot at being pelted with rotten tomatoes. Of course, there’s a 43 percent chance Williams slotted Len third just so he could be one spot ahead of the Hoya.
