Ryan Zimmerman’s vertical leap

“By the way, wish somebody would get a screen grab of [Ryan Zimmerman's] vertical leap to get out of the way of a screaming foul ball when he was leading off 3rd base either yesterday or Sunday,” Thomas Boswell wrote during his Tuesday morning chat. “His feet are tucked up under him and it is hard to believe. Looks like every part of him is at least four feet in the air. Probably impossible. But the freeze frame is unbelievable.”

Two points here: 1) Boz should be a blogger, and 2) Holy cow, Ryan Zimmerman somehow has trampoline implants in his ankles. I can’t explain why this looks the way it does, but the video is striking. It came just before he scored in the 7th inning on Sunday, with the bases loaded and Jhonatan Solano at the plate.

“Wow,” Bob Carpenter said during MASN’s broadcast. “Former member of the University of Virginia high jump team Ryan Zimmerman, evidently.”

“Boy,” F.P. Santangelo agreed. “That’s some hops.”

Here’s the full sequence.
