During Redskins OTA sessions, the team has been listening to music courtesy of Robert Griffin III’s iPod, and some large speakers brought down to field for the purpose of making sure the tunes reach across the vast practice field.
During warmup stretches on Thursday, “Love King” by The Dream turned up on the playlist. Niles Paul wasn’t having that, so he jumped up, ran to the iPod and turned it off. The whole team cheered.
“Well, it was talking about making love, and we’re on a football field,” Paul explained after practice. “Robert’s playlist is everywhere. You never know what you’re gonna get. Sometimes you get some solid playlist. Sometimes, you get something you just have to turn off.”
Well, no one turns off the quarterback’s iPod, so after Paul rejected the R&B song, RGIII ran over and found a crowd pleaser. “Hypnotize” by Notorious B.I.G. came blasting through the speakers, RGIII looked to his teammates for thumbs-up approval, and everyone was happy.
“I try to play to the masses,” he told me when I asked how he chose the songs. “So, obviously rap is where it’s at. I tried to put some country on, some of my linemen wanted some country, so I took care of them. And then the R&B during the stretch part was just to keep them calm. But those guys are like bulls in a cage, so I just turned the rap on and pumped up some Biggie.”
Here’s the playlist from Thursday. None of the linemen-requested country songs showed up. Maybe next week.
(Not on Spotify: Juelz Santana – “Second Coming”)
