I didn’t win $448 million dollars last night, so I got to wake up this morning and write some more about Bryce Harper and his plunking.
Harper spoke to Comcast SportsNet before last night’s game and explained that if the Nats had been a few games up instead of a lot of games down, he might have resorted to fisticuffs.
“I don’t think I should charge the mound [when they have a] 14.5 game lead,” he said. “If we’re ahead a couple of games, I’d probably try putting him six feet under. I wasn’t very happy about it. But I understand why he did it, and I understand why Mac did what he did and I probably would have done the same thing if it were me on the mound.”
Six feet under is a little intense, no?
Many fans tuned into last night’s game in the hopes that some sort of retaliation would happen. Davey Johnson was cryptic about it in his radio appearance yesterday, and everyone was on Retaliation Watch. Alas, there was no retaliation, and those looking for a good ‘ol fashioned plunking were disappointed. Perhaps none more so than Harper, who expressed pregame how he would have liked to see it handled.
“I think if I’m the pitcher on my team, I think I’m gonna drill somebody,” he said, of the lack of retribution on Tuesday. “It’s something that’s part of the game, you know, yesterday, and it’s also something that I think could light a fire for us. But, like I said, we’re 14.5 games back and we don’t need anybody getting ejected or doing anything like that. We got a great team and we gotta push to the end.”
TWEETS OF THE NIGHT
Looks like a few people had to pony up for dinner.
Gotta love credit card roulette with the specialists…

HOPEFUL QUOTE OF THE NIGHT
“It’s not over, you know? We’re not there yet. And even when you get to that point, it’s not like you’re going to give up. As long as there’s a pitcher on the mound and I’m in the lineup, I’m going to give it the best effort. Right now it’s just, it’s not lining up for us.”

WHAT TO WATCH TONIGHT
I know it’s only preseason, but man am I psyched to see football on television again. Redskins at Titans, 8 p.m. on WRC (Channel 4). All TV/Radio listings here.
SUPERSTITION OF THE DAY
You can thank the AP for this gem. Apparently the start of the Braves’ 13-game wining streak coincided with Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez drinking some awful protein drink. He’s been drinking the concoction ever since. “They may be giving me poop. I don’t even know what it is,” Gonzalez said. “But I’ve been drinking them for 13 days in a row now. We’re superstitious, you know.” Can the Nats get some of those?
