Brian Dawkins compares RGIII to the Cowboys

September 3, 2013

As Robert Griffin III filled a national programming hole left open by Tim Tebow’s irrelevance, many fans have complained of RGIII Fatigue, lamenting that every debate show and every sports site seems to deal with the quarterback on a daily basis. Or hourly, in this case.

Now some former players are suggesting that current players, too, might resent the coverage.

“How do you think players in the league feel about seeing him out there that much?” Trey Wingo asked Brian Dawkins and Jeff Saturday over the weekend.

“They’re not digging it,” Dawkins said. “I can only equate that to the Dallas Cowboys. Every year as an Eagle, EVERY year it’s about the Dallas [Cowboys]. It was Dallas Cowboys this, [Dallas Cowboys that]. And so you get tired of seeing that on TV, you get tired of seeing their faces on TV. So you want to make sure that when you play against them, that everybody else recognizes it’s not about them. So I think guys are kind of getting tired of him.”

“Yeah, all those players are gonna want to see him, and see him some more, up close and personal,” Saturday agreed. “Hey man, how you like to see me? You know, not everyone’s doing interviews on me, I’m gonna make sure you remember my name. Like you said, he didn’t bring it on himself, but a lot of that attention and him coming back, boys are gonna be ready for him.”

Now all we need is for a member of the Cowboys to complain that Griffin is over-covered. Or Tebow.

TOM CREAN ON JOHN THOMPSON JR.
Monday was John Thompson Jr.’s 72nd birthday. Indiana Coach Tom Crean celebrated in the best way possible: by wishing happy birthday to John Thompson III. The current Hoyas coach has a birthday in March, but September is close enough.

PARTY PHOTO OF THE WEEKEND
John Wall helped Ludacris celebrate his annual LudaDay Weekend thing. There was a celebrity basketball game, and many party photos.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
You know, for as much as we obsess over Mike Shanahan vs. Dr. James Andrews, Davey Johnson has likely had a tougher go-round this season, medically speaking. There have been at least four or five times when he and one of his players have not been on the same page about a health issue. Here’s the latest, concerning Bryce Harper:

“I was a little disturbed that I wasn’t informed that he was having some treatment on his hip,” Johnson said. “But every time anybody talks to Harp, he says: ‘I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine.’ So I’m going to stick with him.”

BEST NEWS OF THE WEEKEND
For all of our sakes, it was good news to hear that RGIII’s dad will no longer be doing media interviews. That’s one less chain in the nightmare telephone game that has dominated the offseason. Via Dave Sheinin’s terrific piece:

Robert Griffin Jr. is no longer granting interviews to the media, a fact that will undoubtedly please the indignant pundits and message-board posters and the well-meaning Washington Redskins fans who crave only harmony for the burgundy and gold. It may also please the Redskins’ coaches, who would probably rather not have their starting quarterback’s father weighing in, publicly and pointedly, on the direction of the offense. “Good,” one team official said this week when informed of Griffin Jr.’s no-more-interviews edict.

WORKOUT OF THE WEEK
College basketball players are just like you, assuming you’ve occasionally worked out by running up and down the Exorcist Steps just off M Street in Georgetown. Via @GeorgetownHoops.

KISS CAM: HETEROSEXIST?
Slate, ever vigilant on the D.C. sports beat, has an interesting item up about Kiss Cams. It leads with the Nats:

The Washington Nationals have one of the biggest gay fan bases of any professional sports team. Nationals Park is located in Washington, D.C., arguably the gayest city in America. The park has not one but two “nights OUT,” designed specifically for gay attendees. At the last one, the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington sang the national anthem and openly lesbian Sen. Tammy Baldwin threw out the first pitch. There’s a falafel stand. It’s a pretty gay park.

In spite of the Nationals’ generally progressive vibe, however, one painfully heterosexist tradition continues: the kiss cam. Or more accurately, the straight kiss cam. Never in the entire history of the Nationals—and perhaps only once in the known history of professional sports in America—has a gay couple been intentionally featured on a kiss cam.

WHAT TO WATCH TODAY
The Nats are in Philadelphia at 7 on MASN. Seems like it might be a good idea to win. All TV and radio listings are here.
