DeMeco Ryans thinks RGIII will be ‘a little rusty’

“I think everyone’s anticipating that I’ll be rusty, but that’s not the way I think,” Robert Griffin III told reporters on Wednesday. “That’s just not how I’m built.”

“Yeah, I think he’ll be a little rusty,” Eagles linebacker DeMeco Ryans also said on Wednesday.

Okay, Ryans was pretty mild about the whole issue. And he was sort of asked a leading question by a Philadelphia sports-radio host. Still, if a certain second-year quarterback wants to imagine he’ll be facing a field populated by doubters and skeptics, Ryans offered a tiny sliver of support.

“Yeah, I think he’ll be a little rusty,” Ryans told WIP’s Angelo Cataldi, when asked about Griffin sitting out the entire preseason. (Audio here.) “Anybody coming off an injury and not having any reps in live action, I think he’ll be a little rusty. But you can never tell. Some people just got it. I think RGIII’s one of those guys who has it, has what it takes, has that special talent, so it’s not like we can relax and think that he’s not gonna play well. I’m still watching film on him from last year, I still think he has the capabilities to do those things and hurt us defensively if we don’t stand up and stop him.”

Like I said, this is only a tiny, nearly invisible sliver of doubt. But you take what you can get.

Cataldi also virtually begged Ryans to admit his team wouldn’t mind taking some shots at Griffin’s knee.

“Oh, nah,” Ryans insisted. “We’re just trying to get him down. RGIII, he’s a great athlete. He’s a very fast player, knows how to make a lot of plays with his feet, so I would just focus on trying to get him down. It doesn’t matter where you hit him. I’m not gonna be focused on hitting him in his knee or anything like that. As long as we can get him down on the ground, that’ll be good for us.”
