Oscar Schmidt takes a shot at the Wizards

September 9, 2013

For years, the Wizards were saved from true national punchline status by the Clippers. Now the Clippers are respectable, and apparently the Wizards have taken their place in all those jokes.

Thus, this passage from Oscar Schmidt’s acceptance speech at the Basketball Hall of Fame on Sunday. (Watch it here.)

“Then I must thank Cláudio Mortari,” Schmidt said, during a portion of his speech when he was thanking everyone. “This guy’s tough. This guy win wherever he goes. If he came to the Wizards, they win. Yes! I don’t know what championship he would win, but he’ll win.”

I mean, has he never heard of the Bobcats? Didn’t he like that Otto Porter pick?

Regardless, Schmidt’s punchline led to uproarious laughter and clapping, plus some groans. Pat Riley put his head in his hands, then smiled broadly. And Wizards fans everywhere vowed never to visit the Oscar Schmidt exhibit in Springfield.

FOOTBALL PHOTO OF THE WEEKEND

I went to my first ever Virginia football home game on Saturday. This sort of summed up the experience. Also, Oregon just scored.

FOOTBALL PHOTO OF THE MORNING

Probably the two most maniacal Redskins fans I know showed up before sunrise at FedEx Field to, I don’t know, stand vigil over the dark stadium I guess. Via NBC Washington’s Chuck Bell.

SCALIA ON THE REDSKINS

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was asked if he’s a Redskins fan.

“I’m not really much of a football fan,” he answered. “To the extent I am, I hate the Redskins. In fact, I always root for Dallas.”

KORNHEISER’S DEBUT

Thing I just realized: the last time the Redskins began their season on Monday Night Football was in September of 2006 against the Vikings. That was also Tony Kornheiser’s debut in the Monday Night Football booth, meaning I remember that game as if it were yesterday. Brad Johnson and Ryan Longwell led Minnesota to a 19-16 win; John Hall missed a late field goal, and Mark Brunell threw for 163 yards. From the AP’s Joseph White:

“Big things are expected of the Redskins this year, a confidence reflected in an attendance of 90,608 that set a new record for the largest stadium in the NFL. Even Hollywood made an appearance: Actors Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were guests of owner Dan Snyder, who has recently entered into a partnership with Cruise’s production company.”

VAN PELT AT THE HAMILTON

Scott Van Pelt will broadcast his ESPN Radio show live from The Hamilton on Monday, from 1-4. ESPN 980′s Scott Linn will host the event, and will be giving away tickets to the Eagles game. Admission is free. I will probably stop by, which really elevates the event to A-list status.

RGIII AND SYRIA

Because RGIII affects everything, RGIII affects Syria. From a Politico story, illustrated with Griffin’s photo:

From the beginning, Obama’s recent Syria push has been hobbled by the calendar — and the scheduling snarls only get worse from here. Obama will sit Monday for interviews for six TV news programs, which will air within an hour of what had promised to be the week’s most highly anticipated Washington event: the NFL Redskins’ season opener against Philadelphia.

WHAT TO WATCH TODAY
The Nats face the Mets in New York at 7 on MASN2. There’s also a football game. Coverage begins at 6:55 on WDCA and ESPN. All TV and radio listings are here.
