Alex Ovechkin’s summer job: Maria Kirilenko’s bag-carrier

Any time you saw Maria Kirilenko this summer, Alex Ovechkin wasn’t far behind. He followed her to France for the French Open, to London for Wimbeldon and a number of cities in between. Sometimes he carried her bags, or acted as her practice partner. Other times he just sat in the stands and cheered. But he was always there, and when I asked him about on Thursday, he said it was a no-brainer.

“It was all good,” he told me. “We live together, so it doesn’t matter if she’s playing tennis or on vacation. It’s always nice to have her around.”

Ovi said he didn’t mind taking a back seat to his fiancee. And as for carrying her bags, he took his task seriously.

“It was my job,” he laughed. “I get paid.”

Not a bad gig if you can get it.
