Joel Rechlicz, as Katie Carrera noted, has 1,123 penalty minutes and three goals in his pro hockey career. Gentlemen like that are not generally chosen to attempt shootouts, unless everyone else on the team has scurvy.

But Rechlicz was rewarded for all his hours of dirty work on Monday night, when Adam Oates requested he give it a shot. Naturally, the Recker/Wrecker scored, to give Washington the win. Or whatever it’s called when you score more shootout goals than the other team in a preseason NHL engagement.

“He didn’t even bat an eye — it was like he expected it. Even after he scored it was like no big deal,” Oates said. “Or shock, I’m not sure.”

You want shock? John Walton provided shock. The team’s radio voice might as well have been calling an overtime Game 7 winner in the Eastern Conference Finals, to judge by his reaction.

“HEEEEEE SCORESSSSSSSS!!!!!!” Walton calmly reported. “JOEL RECHLICZ — YES, JOEL RECHLICZ — WINS IT FOR WASHINGTON IN THE FOURTH ROUND OF THE SHOOTOUT!!!!! AND TO PARAPHRASE JACK BUCK, I CAN’T BELIEVE WHAT I JUST SAW. OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!”
