Betting on the Wizards

I don’t care too much about your personal life, no offense, unless you have a funny mustache or sports-related tattoo, so you probably don’t care too much about mine. Which is why I try to avoid posting fascinating tales from my personal life.

But I’m going to make an exception here, to tell a quick story from the weekend. Since the Redskins weren’t playing, I went to Las Vegas. Since the Wizards were big underdogs in Oklahoma City Sunday night, despite having won two straight with their (mostly) full lineup, I figured I should bet on them to win. Since the stakes were minuscule (I bet $10 to net $40 if they won outright), I figured my professional ethics would not be compromised.

Anyhow, as you probably know, the Wizards led virtually the entire game and were up by 10 with less than 3:30 to play. Do you know how many veggie hot dogs with coleslaw you can get in Vegas with $40 of Wizards-fueled winnings? Enough, is the answer. More than enough.

Then the Wizards were outscored 14-4 down the stretch, and Nene was ejected, and everyone missed every free throw, and Randy Wittman probably missed some free throws, and Jan Vesely visualized missing some free throws, and Kevin Durant hit a late three-pointer to tie it, and Bradley Beal missed a game-winner at the end of regulation, and John Wall missed a game-winner at the end of overtime, and no one was eating any complimentary veggie hot dogs, with or without coleslaw.

My friend Will, a lifelong D.C. sports fan, was with me on this trip. He also bet $10 on the Wizards to win outright. But he laughed at my frustration. He said if you’re a lifelong Wizards fan, you never thought they were winning that game. They could have been up by 376 points with less than 10 seconds remaining, and a true Wizards fan would still figure they’d lose. He said this is what it’s like being a 30-something D.C. sports fan. You just expect the worst.

So I thought this was a nice learning experience for me. I didn’t grow up in Washington, and maybe I haven’t internalized enough of the dread, especially concerning the pro basketball outfit. Maybe every D.C. sportswriter should suffer some improbable losses by betting on Washington teams. Heck, maybe The Post should expense it. Make it a part of orientation or something.

TWEET OF THE DAY
The playoffs still seem like a severe longshot to me, but How About Them Cowboys is a great way to refer to the pro football team in Dallas.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
From the Dallas Morning News:

Rick Carlisle warns that the Mavericks won’t be able to match Washington’s athleticism. “We’ve got to win games on grit and guts….We’ve got good athletes, but if you lined us up with these guys [the Wizards] in Speedos, it’d be a wipeout if it was based on that.”

At swimming? Or running in Speedos?

FANS OF THE WEEKEND
Local sports photographer Bill Bride spotted these chaps at George Mason. You don’t really need much of an imagination with costumes like that.

VINTAGE CAPS T-SHIRT OF THE DAY
I would wear this shirt and you would wear this shirt and anyone who likes awesome things would wear this shirt.

BEER AND TURKEY
I don’t eat turkey, but I do drink beer. Some turkey farmer in New Hampshire insists that his turkeys taste better because he feeds them beer. Via the AP:

[Joe] Morette is raising about 50 turkeys this year for the harvest holiday of Thanksgiving, when turkeys are the centerpiece of feasts across America. He has been giving his birds beer since 1993, when he and his workers popped open a few cans after work on a hot July day. A turkey knocked one over and started drinking, he said, and they’ve been sipping the suds ever since. Morette, who prefers serving the turkeys lager over ale, insists the beer makes birds fatter, more flavorful and juicier.

WHAT TO WATCH TONIGHT
The Caps host Columbus at 7 on Comcast SportsNet. The Wizards are in Dallas at 8:30 on CSN+. All the Caps fans who complain whenever their team is on CSN+ will be happy. All the Wizards fans who complain whenever their team is on CSN+ will be sad. Remember; the network strives for a 50-50 split, every year. All TV and radio listings are here.
