The NFL is doing a bunch of Salute to Service stuff this month, which involved the creation of some military-themed merchandise.
The Redskins went above and beyond, e-mailing fans this week with a compelling offer. If you buy one Redskins New Era 9FORTY Salute To Service Hat with adjustable back, camouflage bill and camouflage ribbon on the back, the team will send an identical hat to a member of our Armed Forces.
The hat will run you $40 on the Redskins site. Plus $8.99 for the cheapest delivery option, which promises delivery within 10-14 days to anywhere in the contiguous United States. Plus tax. So that’s $51.39: you get a hat, and a military member gets a hat.
If you don’t want to wait for the 10-14 days, though, there’s another option. Several sites are offering the New Era Washington Redskins Salute to Service 9FORTY Adjustable Hat with camouflage bill and camouflage ribbon the back for $21.95. Three-day business shipping will run you $4.99, so if you bought one for yourself and another to donate to a member of the military, the total comes to $48.89. (The Redskins want $20.72 for three-day air shipping.)
I also tried NFLShop.com, where the hats cost the same $21.95, and the shipping cost the same $4.99, and the total reached the same $48.89 amount. For reasons that are unclear to me, neither fanatics.com nor the NFL Shop is charging tax, while the Redskins charge $2.40, but whatever. An extra $2.50 won’t kill anyone when charity is involved.
So choose whichever method you’d like. You get a hat, a military member gets a hat, and everyone’s happy.
(Note: The buy-one-donate-one deal is also available at the five official team stores, where the shipping costs would be nil.)
