Two of the Lightning’s first three goals came during those power plays, and after the game Green said he apologized to his teammates.
“I just apologized,” he said. “The boys understand. We go through this as a team sometimes. And the way we responded and the team responded was great. We’ve got each other’s back, and that’s what it’s all about. It’s a great group of guys.”
During his weekly call with the Junkies on 106.7 The Fan Wednesday, teammate Brooks Laich said it’s all good.
“Greenie was just sending a message to Tampa saying, ‘Listen. I’m a policeman,’” Laich joked. “I don’t know, it happens like that. Some nights are tough, some nights things don’t go your way early on in the game. It didn’t go Mike’s way, and I saw him in the locker room during the first intermission there when he had his 10-minute misconduct and stuff, and I said, ‘Listen, this game’s not over.’ We’re never out of a 3-0 game. And you see later on in the game he makes a great pass and he no-looks the pass to Ovi and freezes the goaltender and I think that was Alex’s third goal, and in that way Green redeems himself and gets us back in the game.”
When the Caps went down 3-0 in the first period, the boos began to rain down from the stands. Laich said that while he understands it as a fan, as a player it doesn’t feel too good.
“Our fans are behind us all the time,” he said. “We understand that. But when you do get booed, it sucks. It’s not like we said, ‘Alright, fan. Tonight we’re gonna go out and take this loss and give ‘em three, fours goals here and we’re gonna have a great night.’ We’re trying. We’re playing another NHL team with very good players and a very good team. Some nights it happens like that, and I understand from a fan perspective. They drive in in the snow and the sleet and it’s rain or whatever. It’s cold and they still make it to the game. And all of a sudden it’s 3-0 and they paid money to be there and they want a better effort and they start booing. Maybe it’s just their way of giving us a kick in the ass a little bit.”
I guess it worked.
