Brooks Laich’s admiration for figure skating

January 3

A number of Canadian hockey players I’ve spoken to over the  years have told me that it’s not uncommon for young players in Canada to take figure skating lessons to improve their skating. Brooks Laich was on the with Junkies on 106.7 The Fan on Thursday morning and talked about his admiration for the sport.

“I think most guys initially would say, ‘Oh, it’s a wimpy sport. Play hockey, that’s the real ice sport,’ or whatever,” Laich said. “But I don’t think a lot of guys really comprehend how difficult it is to figure skate and the actual ability that they have. Figure skaters, their ability to skate is so far more advanced and intricate than hockey players. It’s amazing how talented they are and the balance they have and to be able to jump and do the footwork and the edge work that they do. It’s incredible.

“My sister used to figure skate, and the abilities that they have are incredible. So I don’t think guys really understand or appreciate how hard it is to figure skate.”

TWEET OF THE NIGHT

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT

Laich, on the Caps allowing a high number of response goals:

“To be honest, it’s sort of embarrassing. I mean, you score a goal, you stick to your rules that next shift — you get the puck, you get it in deep. That way, their bench is in some disarray, their coach is on them saying we’re outworking them, and then your decisions with and without the puck, you have to be sharp in that instance. What was it, two tonight that we gave up quickly after a goal? It’s not acceptable.”

HIGHLIGHT OF THE NIGHT

John Carlson, with a pretty great save.

ONE MORE ON SHANAHAN

Chris Cillizza handed Mike Shanahan his “Worst Week in Washington” honors. One could argue that getting to walk away from the Redskins mess with a $7 million check is actually a pretty good week.

FAREWELL

The drum leader for the Redskins marching band, Greg Rodgers, passed away on Monday. Josh Freedom du Lac has the story of the man and his impact on the band here.
