Five things about Sean McVay, new Redskins offensive coordinator

(John McDonnell/The Washington Post)

Last week, Sarah offered 10 things you might not have known about new Redskins Coach Jay Gruden.

Now, I’m here with five things you might not have known about new Redskins offensive coordinator Sean McVay.

By the time we get to wide receivers coach, you’ll be lucky if you get one thing. Maybe a half a thing.

1. He palled around with Jerry Rice

Sure, you already knew that McVay’s grandfather John was a former NFL heavyweight, in the 49ers Hall of Fame after years as an executive/front office architect there, as well as a former coach of the Giants. But did you know that a young Sean McVay got to hang out with the 49ers superstars?

“I remember when I was 5 and 6 years old and my dad would take me to the 49ers’ Saturday walkthroughs before Sunday games,” McVay told the Dayton Daily News when he was a wide receiver at Miami of Ohio. “I’d get to hang out and talk to the players. It might not seem like much, but it makes a big impact on a little kid when Steve Young and Jerry Rice come over and say ‘Hey.’ And I remember riding the team bus to a game one Sunday and sitting next to center Jesse Sapolu and he was joking around with me, making me feel like one of the guys.”

2.  He’s wanted to be a coach since high school

High school kids are supposed to have grandiose dreams: to be star players or to be star columnists, not to be lowly coaches, or lowly bloggers who spend their lives reading old clips. But McVay broke the mold.

As a star high school quarterback in Georgia, McVay was recruited by several other schools, including Tulane and Duke, with schools disagreeing about whether he had a future as a wide receiver or cornerback. But he already knew what his future held, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

McVay, who wants to earn a degree in business or teaching and coach football, said his decision will begin with academics.

“I also want to see where I fit in as far as playing time,” he said. “I’d like a chance to compete early. I also want to go to a program that is on the rise, but that seems to be the case with all three schools.”

3. He was a high school star

Despite his coaching dreams, he was  a legitimate star at Marist, a private school near Atlanta. He became the first quarterback at his high school to rush and pass for more than 1,000 yards as a junior; he also rushed and passed for more than 1,000 yards while leading Marist to a state championship in his senior year, according to the AJC.

And it’s not like Marist didn’t have stars at quarterback; previous QBs there included future NBA forward Matt Harpring; Rob Perez — who went on to win two Liberty Bowl MVPs at Air Force — and Paul Nichols, who led Davidson to its only undefeated season and later became the Wildcats’ head coach.

“Sean is as good as we’ve ever had,” Alan Chadwick, who began coaching Marist in 1976, told the AJC in 2003. “Our offense starts at the quarterback position. We require someone who wants the ball and can makes plays…Sean is the perfect fit.”

4. He coached in the UFL

I suppose you probably already knew this one, but this is still a fairly impressive announcement from the UFL’s Florida Tuskers in 2009:

In Orlando, under the guidance of Head Coach Jim Haslett, the following coaches were publicized:

  • Bill Bradley, Secondary

  • Chuck Bresnahan, Linebackers

  • Jay Gruden, Offensive Coordinator

  • Carl Hairston, Defensive Line

  • Bill Laveroni, Offensive Line

  • Sean McVay, Quality Control/Wide Receivers

  • Ricky Porter, Director of Football Operations/Running Backs

  • Al Roberts, Special Teams/Tight End

5. He’s young

How young is the 27-year old McVay? He’s younger than 17 Redskins players.

How young is McVay? He was not alive the last time Joe Theismann threw an NFL pass.

How young is McVay? The Post’s Michael Lee wrote about him when he was still a sophomore in high school.

How young is McVay? He was still in high school when Joe Gibbs came back to the Redskins.
