“The Washington Redskins announced on Wednesday that they have hired former Cleveland Browns assistant Brian Baker to coach their outside linebackers,” Mike Jones wrote last week. “Baker, 51, played outside linebacker for Maryland from 1981 to 1983 and helped the Terps win the ACC in ’83.”

You know what that means: It’s time to ask the fine folks in the Maryland athletic department for some photos of Baker from the archives.

Thing I learned: college football players in the early ’80s liked mustaches. They were so common then, that proto-bloggers probably had proto-field days whenever they discovered a clean-shaven athlete.

Also, if you care to read through archived Post college football coverage, you could find beat writer Michael Wilbon writing about Baker, and Mike Tice, and Kevin Glover. Here’s one from a 1982 game against North Carolina:

“All week long it was ‘Kelvin Bryant, Kelvin Bryant and more Kelvin Bryant,’ ” said [Willie] Joyner’s roommate, defensive end Brian Baker. “We couldn’t hear about anybody else. Willie’s a somber guy, so he didn’t say anything. But he took it as a personal challenge.”

When Joyner initially broke clear for his 84-yard run, the Maryland bench was momentarily stunned.

“I’m a very emotional guy,” said Baker, “and I was silent. I couldn’t believe it.”

“It was great,” said tight end John Tice.

It was Tice, along with offensive linemen Kevin Glover and Dave Pacella who controlled the line of scrimmage against Division I-A’s best rushing defense.

The next season, as mentioned, the Terps won the ACC title despite a loss at ineligible Clemson in their penultimate game.

“They’re undefeated against ACC teams,” Brian Baker,  by then a senior, said of Clemson after that loss. “We are the champions, but we can’t say that. It hurts that they took something from us last year we felt belonged to us, and damn if they didn’t do it again today.”
