John Wall was ‘close to tears,’ called his mom upon learning he’s an all-star

January 31, 2014

Eastern Conference coaches selected John Wall as an alternate for the All-Star Game, a first for the Wizards guard. Wall found out Thursday night only 30 minutes before the rest of the world, and according to a phone chat with J. Michael of Comcast SportsNet, the first person he called was his mom.

“I called my mom and said, ‘We made it,’ ” Wall said.  “We made another step in life. It’s one of my goals I set for myself when I made it to the NBA. I’m glad I accomplished it.”

When Wall signed his $80 million contract extension in August, he broke down sobbing during the press conference. While he didn’t get that emotional this time, Wall admitted it was close.

“I was close to tears, to be honest,” said Wall. “Getting in front of my teammates and stuff, talking to those guys tomorrow, I might have a couple of tears. I appreciate those guys for believing in me, having faith in me being their point guard and leader. Most of those guys text me and called me and said, ‘Congratulations.’ I know I have a great team behind me and supporting me.”
