Irvin: Jackson signing changes balance of power in NFC East

Can one player leaving an NFC East team and joining a different NFC East team change the entire division’s balance of power?

“Oh, yes it does,” Michael Irvin said on Philadelphia’s 97.5 The Fan last week. “Oh yes. Because going into next year, I was ready to say that Philadelphia was the clear favorite in that division. Not anymore. No sir.”

The hosts expressed disbelief. Irvin insisted.

“C’mon what, man. I’m serious. You don’t find this speed,” Irvin argued. “Let me tell you the uniqueness of a DeSean Jackson for all of you laymen. … Let me put it in laymen’s terms so you can understand why this man’s so incredible. When you get fast guys, usually they have such stride frequency and turnover in their legs that they can’t zero in and focus in and snatch the ball. They’re not steady enough as they run. They’re not steady enough, and they can’t steady their body to catch that ball. That’s why you’ll see guys with great speed but no ability….

“[Jackson] has the ability to calm it all down and bring in the ball while running fast. This kid is special like that. He is not just speed. He is special, and you’re going to miss him, and the Redskins are going to enjoy him, and yes, he changed the balance of that division.”

QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND

Ian Desmond, on trying to quit mouth tobacco:

“It’s not easy. I feel for people who have to deal with this stuff on a larger scale. I’m not proud that it’s got that control over me. But I’m fighting it. I hate to say this because I know there’s going to be kids that hear this. For me, growing up, it was part of the game. That’s what it was. When I put my uniform on, I feel like that’s part of what I need to put on. It just goes with the job, for me. I’m trying to shake it off.”
