What was Redskins Coach Jay Gruden thinking after the division rival Eagles released DeSean Jackson?
“As soon as that happened it was ‘Wow’ for us,” Gruden said on SiriusXM NFL Radio with Rich Gannon and Bruce Murray Monday afternoon. “Guys like that don’t come around very often. And when they do, you have to do your due diligence and you have to do whatever it takes to try to get the guy if you think he’s a fit. And we felt like he was a fit for us. So Bruce Allen, all systems go, and made a play for him, and it ended up working out to get him.”
Then Gruden was asked about making sure Jackson didn’t leave Washington to visit another team before signing a contract.
“That was tough, now,” Gruden said. “Bruce did some work, now. He and his agent, they went at it for a good, I don’t know, 24 hours straight probably, who knows how long they went at it. I’m sure there was some talk about him going to other teams. But luckily Bruce and DeSean’s agent hashed out a deal, and DeSean agreed to it.
“And I think a lot had to do with the recruitment process of DeAngelo Hall and Robert Griffin. [They] did a nice job of convincing him that D.C. was the place to be. And I think he liked what he heard from the staff here also, and when it was all said and done, I thought the financial package of it was fair for him in his mind. And he was anxious to sign and move forward with his football career, and also have an opportunity to play the Eagles twice [a year] I’m sure didn’t hurt any.”
With Jackson complementing earlier signings, Gruden also said the team was pretty much finished with free agency.
“I think free agency, we’ve done enough here for the most part unless somebody else comes up that piques our interest. but right now we’re very happy with who we have picked up in free agency,” Gruden said. “Plus we re-signed a lot of our key guys in Orakpo, Meriweather and Santana Moss. And we feel very good now. When I first took the job, our depth was very limited, and we had blank spots all over the board. And now we feel good. We can go out right now and play a game. We have depth at every position, and we feel like we can compete. And now we add some pieces in the draft, and I think we’re starting to shape something up pretty good here in Washington.”
