If you had told me at the beginning of the season that the Capitals would miss the playoffs and the Wizards would make the playoffs, I would’ve thought you were a little crazy. If you had told me that the Capitals and the Wizards would make the playoffs, I would’ve laughed in your face. Don’t you know that D.C. sports fans can’t have nice things?
Once upon a time (1984-88), the Bullets and the Capitals both made the playoffs in five consecutive seasons. Since then, Washington’s NBA and NHL franchises have made the playoffs in the same year exactly once, in 2008. During the same period, both teams have missed the playoffs in the same season three times (2004, 2002, 1999). Pretty sad, right?
As illustrated in the interactive chart below, the Bullets’/Wizards’ ups have coincided with the Capitals’ downs, and vice versa. There was no NHL season in 2005 due to the lockout.
