Wizards fans chant “Free Nene” as Leonsis wears his jersey

Nene was gone, but he was hardly forgotten. The Wizards forward was suspended for Game 4 of Washington’s playoff series with the Bulls for his role in a Game 3 altercation, and while the team did pretty well without him, fans at Verizon Center let it be known that they were thinking about him.

Those fans included Wizards Supporter Number One, owner Ted Leonsis himself, who made a point of wearing of wearing Nene’s jersey as he sat courtside.

Other folks went a bit further, altering Nene apparel to display the slogan, “Free Nene,” even as that chant boomed out multiple times during the game.

It didn’t take long for #FreeNene to start trending on Twitter. Unfortunately, it also didn’t take long for the hashtag/political movement to jump the shark:
