About five years ago, a bunch of D.C. natives who had been playing lacrosse together recreationally decided to form their own team. First they needed a name, and a logo. Since no one was using the Bullets, they figured that would work.
“A lot of the guys being in our late 20s and early 30s, the Bullets stuff slightly predated us,” Michael Annen, one of the founders, told me. “So it’s sort of a magical memory, something we haven’t really experienced directly for the most part. I have no direct memories of Wes Unseld or a lot of the great Bullets players. But when we see those jerseys, those throwbacks, dude that’s awesome. It just sort of speaks to us.”
Not surprisingly, this gear has proved popular in the community. Random people buy the shirts “because they see the Bullets on there and they want to rep it,” Annen said. Others use the merchandise as workout gear. Opponents compliment the team on its look. In a lacrosse culture where Houston Astros throwback tributes are prized, you can imagine the allure of Bullets gear.
“The aesthetic, the tie-in with D.C., the nostalgia that just predates us,” Annen said, describing the appeal. “They love it.”
The team plays year-round; indoor box lacrosse in Dulles during the fall and winter, and in the Stars and Stripes Lacrosse League during the spring and summer. (Home games are at Sidwell Friends.) Most of the players played collegiately; some have played professionally. They sell their shirts after games at Breadsoda, the Glover Park bar that sponsors the team. Other merchandise features images of Marion Barry and DC Brau, which certainly fits in with the demographic.
