Gio Gonzalez and RGIII break out pink cleats for Mother’s Day

Gio Gonzalez was excited about his return to Oakland, where the Nationals lefty spent the first four years of his career. Gonzalez sported some snazzy, pink Jumpman cleats for his Mother’s Day start.

Nice, right?

The same can’t be said for Gonzalez’s performance. He allowed a pair of three-run homers to A’s catcher and former Nationals prospect Derek Norris, one of the players included in the deal that brought Gonzalez to Washington.

Cameras caught Gonzalez slamming his glove and being restrained by pitching coach Steve McCatty in the dugout between innings. It probably wasn’t because a teammate made fun of his shoes.

Via James Wagner:

“It’s just competition,” Manager Matt Williams said. “We’re not going to go any further than that with it. That’s the team’s business and for nobody else. But everybody wants to do well, and everybody wants to win.”

Added Gonzalez: “Nothing happened.”

Gonzalez wasn’t the only D.C. sports celebrity who sported Mother’s Day kicks.

Perhaps John Wall should’ve worn his cherry blossom shoes and socks last night.
