Many people who follow the Caps reacted mildly one way or another to Monday’s news that longtime front-office employee Brian MacLellan would become the team’s new general manager.
At least one person — former Caps front-office official and current Ottawa radio analyst Shawn Simpson — did not react mildly.
Now, before we get to Simpson’s scathing online criticism, let’s pause to recall how Simpson’s tenure in Washington ended. This is how Tarik El-Bashir described it in The Post 10 years ago this spring:
The upheaval in the Washington Capitals’ front office continued this week when the team dismissed director of hockey operations Shawn Simpson, one of the top assistants to General Manager George McPhee with regard to player and personnel matters.
Simpson’s departure comes a month after the Capitals fired four members of their hockey operations staff and just days before one of the most important weekends in franchise history — the NHL entry draft on Saturday and Sunday in Raleigh, N.C., where Washington will make three selections in the first round, including the No. 1 overall choice.
Simpson oversaw the club’s developmental programs and worked closely with the team’s professional and amateur scouts. He was also the general manager of the team’s top minor league affiliate, the Portland Pirates of the AHL, and he scouted NHL games.
Simpson, 35, was told Monday that his contract, which expires at the end of the month, would not be renewed. He served in that capacity for seven seasons.
“It’s never easy when these things happen, but it’s time for us to move on,” Simpson said yesterday. “I am very thankful for the opportunity I was given.”
McPhee declined to comment.
So Simpson is not exactly an unbiased outside party when it comes to the Caps’ front office. That being said, here is some of what he wrote after Monday’s news came out:
@TedLeonsis Glad you brought Barry back. What a shame giving MacLlenan this post. Never met a lazier man!!!— Shawn Simpson (@TSNSimmer) May 26, 2014
@MCass_93 Just a proud Caps alumni. This is shocking!!!— Shawn Simpson (@TSNSimmer) May 26, 2014
@bmcnally14 Brian. I love the Caps. It’s not bitter. Just sad. He worked under me. It was beyond lazy. I’m just shocked!!!— Shawn Simpson (@TSNSimmer) May 26, 2014
There was more, along similar lines. If I had to guess, I’d say that Simpson and MacLellan won’t be having a beer summit anytime soon.
