With the Nationals leading the Giants 9-2, Ian Desmond stepped to the plate in the top of the ninth on Monday at AT&T Park needing a home run to join Brad Wilkerson and Cristian Guzman as the only Nationals players to hit for the cycle.
Desmond, who finished with five RBI, flew out to left against Yusmeiro Petit and slammed his bat as he left the batter’s box.
In a seven-run game, Desmond’s display almost certainly violated one of baseball’s unwritten rules. Desmond knew it, and, unprompted, apologized after the game.
“For the record, I probably shouldn’t have slammed my bat,” Desmond said. “If Petit hears about this or sees this, I apologize. That was pretty bush league. But I was kind of caught up in the moment. You don’t get that opportunity often.”
