Johnny Holliday on the ‘great move’ to the Big Ten

I was chatting with Johnny Holliday last week, and I asked the longtime Terps broadcaster about his future travel plans.

“I’ll be going to places I’ve never been before, meeting guys I’ve never met before,” Holliday said. “I’ve never been to Nebraska. I’ve never been to Iowa. I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be all brand new experiences. I have no problems with it at all. [Although] I might have to wear a heavy coat in Nebraska in the winter time instead of being down in Miami. … I don’t know anybody in Nebraska. It’ll be interesting, I’m sure. But they feel the same way about us, they don’t know a damn thing about Maryland either.”

The subject, of course, was Maryland’s move to the Big Ten, which will become official in just a couple weeks. Holliday has already done a few events with Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany; he will also emcee one of Maryland’s Big Ten celebrations next month. We talked about the Big Ten logo that recently went down on the Comcast Center court; “kind of surreal,” Holliday said.

“But I think when all is said and done, it’s a great move to do it,” said Holliday, Maryland’s radio voice since 1979.  “No question you’re going to the number one conference in the country.”

I was talking to Holliday because of his upcoming charity golf event, the 9th annual Johnny Holliday Scholarship Golf Classic, which goes off Monday at Bretton Woods Golf Course in Germantown. The event raises money for the Youth Leadership Foundation, whose goal is to provide academic opportunities for underserved youth in the District.

“They need money, they need funding, they need people to support what they do,” said Holliday, whose event has raised more than $1 million for YLF over nine years. “Having seen it first-hand, I know the people that come out to this tournament will be impressed with it like I was.”

Anyhow, that’s the point. You’re invited to go out to the tournament. For the first time, Holliday’s event is inviting the public to come out to the event, meet the celebrity golfers and walk the course with them. This year’s scheduled attendees Kristen Berset, Steve Buckhantz, Tyler Clippard, Juan Dixon, Bob Ehrlich, Leon Harris, Chick Hernandez, Sam Hollenbach, Dave Jageler, Ray Knight, Chris Knoche, Al Koken, Mark Lerner, Scott McBrien, Brig Owens, Tanner Roark, Craig Stammen, Doc Walker, Gary Williams, Walt Williams, and several others. Harris will also be honored with the annual Community Champion Award.

“If you get 100 people that show up, that’s 100 more people that are going to be exposed to helping these kids,” Holliday said.

The event begins at 10:30 a.m. For more information, see here.
