Potomac Nationals crown fastest, strongest and longest beards at Beard-A-Palooza

The Jayson Werth BobbleBeard giveaway was but one part of the Potomac Nationals’s Beard-A-Palooza celebration at Pfitzner Stadium last weekend. Festivities began Friday, when fans with beards — and even goatees — were invited to participate in a pregame ‘Parade of Beards’ along the warning track from the first base gate to the third base gate. The Beard Olympics were contested during Saturday’s double-header and consisted of three main events.

Fastest Beard

No, this was not a competition to determine the fan with the fastest-growing beard, though some minor league team should try that over a three-game series. This was a footrace among men with beards. There were eight participants, with two heats held between Saturday’s first and second games. The winners of each heat raced along the first base line during the second inning of the second game.

Strongest Beard

When I first read that the Beard Olympics would include an event to determine the strongest beard, I imagined someone adding little weights to strings tried to two competitors’ beards until one of them couldn’t take it anymore. Alas, the strongest beard competition involved a race between two guys with beards to see who could complete 25 push-ups first.

Bog readers might recognize the winner, BJ Treuting, as the middle school math teacher and Washington Nationals season ticket holder who vowed not to shave his beard until the Nats win the World Series.

“I went up against a Phillies fan, so I knew I had to win,” said Treuting, who hasn’t shaved since January 2012 and arrived at the park at 2:45 to ensure he got one of the 1,000 BobbleBeards.

Longest Beard

This event was straightforward. Six bearded fans, including Treuting, had their beards measured with a tape measure. Treuting said it was hard to complain after losing to “a couple of 80-year-old guys.”

Saturday’s “grand finale,” as Potomac Nationals assistant general manager Zach Prehn described it, was the beard tasting. Three fans were originally slated to participate, but two of them backed out, and I can’t blame them. Two Nationals employees dipped fake beards in two different dipping sauces — ranch and honey mustard — and a “lucky fan that was blindfolded” tasted them.

“He got both of them right,” Prehn said.

Beard-a-Palooza concluded Sunday with a three-round Beard vs. Food eating contest. The first round involved eating as many hot dogs as possible in two minutes. The second round involved eating as many onion rings as possible in a minute-and-a-half. The final round was a race to finish a 12-0unce cup filled with nacho cheese, and the results were every bit as gross as you might imagine.

No, really. Scroll down at your own risk.

It has nothing to do with beards or Beard-a-Palooza, but the Potomac Nationals wore Iron Man jerseys on Sunday, which is pretty cool.
