Halfway through his freshman season, Virginia sophomore baseball star Joe McCarthy jogged out to right field at Charlottesville’s Davenport Field and saw a giant cutout of his head staring back at him from the bleachers.

“I didn’t know what to think about it,” McCarthy told ESPN for a taped segment that aired during the first game of Virginia’s College World Series championship series against Vanderbilt on Monday. “I just started laughing.”

McCarthy’s sister, Morgan, led an effort to add various features — a la Mr. Potato Head — to the cutout throughout the season and it’s become a staple at Virginia games. The cutout has been a big hit in Omaha.

McCarthy went 1 for 4 with two runs and an RBI in Virginia’s 9-8 loss to the Commodores in the first game of the best-of-three series. His fathead will likely feature yet another new look when the series resumes tonight.
