Jurgen Klinsmann, RFK Stadium and the 1994 World Cup program

Flags are awesome.

During the 1994 World Cup, I went to a Group F match between Saudi Arabia and Belgium at RFK Stadium with my grandfather. I don’t remember much about the Saudis’ 1-0 win, but I do remember being fascinated by the pull-out group standings tracker that came with the official gameday program. Here are a few of my other favorite pages.

Jurgen Klinsmann was featured prominently on the Germany preview page.

I owned a T-shirt with the 1994 World Cup mascot, Striker, but man, that flag polo shirt in the upper left of this Woodward & Lothrop ad is something.

Bill Clinton wrote a letter to fans.

Washington Post soccer writer Steve Goff, in a short profile of RFK: “Anyone who ever has attended a Washington Redskins National Football League game knows the spine-tingling rush of noise and excitement RFK produces when the game is on.”
