On his first day back with the Major League club this week, Bryce Harper stayed below the radar, not making any waves and declining to say anything provocative that might lead to lots of headlines and columns and sports-radio segments.
Also in Opposite World: you could show up at Nats Park five minutes after the first pitch and receive four Harper bobbleheads, plus a free beer.
Which meant that, in the real world, Harper said what he said about the lineup, prompted fire and brimstone from Boz, helped star in the win, unwittingly recreated his bobblehead’s pose, and then earned a postgame interview with MASN’s Dan Kolko, who asked Harper how dangerous his team’s offense could be now that everyone is finally healthy.
“We’re the best team in baseball.,” Harper immediately answered. “You know, I truly believe that. We’ve got a great group of guys. We’ve got probably THE best bullpen in the league. And 1-8, [the lineup's] unbelievable. A very powerful lineup, and it’s a lot of fun to get back.”
National media outlets didn’t pick up on this. In Opposite World. They were too busy not writing about the Redskins name.
In the real world, Big League Stew went with “Bryce Harper returns to Nats, proclaims ‘We’re the best team in baseball’ ”
Which probably won’t be the last headline about this.
