Capitals GM Brian MacLellan’s page in the 1990 Calgary Flames cookbook is the greatest

New Capitals General Manager Brian MacLellan has been busy since the NHL’s free agency period began Tuesday, adding new ingredients to a roster that lacked depth and failed to taste the playoffs last season. While some fans and pundits have questioned MacLellan’s recipe for success, the guy claims to make a mean Beef Wellington, so perhaps we should all just stay out of the kitchen. Too many cooks and all.

Which brings us to the 1990 Calgary Flames’ ‘Red Hot Recipes,’ a cookbook of favorite recipes from the families of Flames players, including MacLellan. (A toast to Bog reader Jennifer Hull for passing along the pages below.)

MacLellan’s bio page  in the cookbook, which was sold to raise money for Calgary’s Sexual Assault Centre, features an incredible scouting report of his role as a sneaky instigator among his teammates and this incredible paragraph:

Although Brian’s cooking abilities are limited, he claims to make a great Beef Wellington…but he wouldn’t divulge the recipe. Brian’s second choice for dinner is to pick up the phone and order in! After a good meal at home, he likes to sit back and listen to some Van Morrison or watch “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”

This is also the first time I’ve seen MacLellan referred to as “Denny.”

MacLellan’s favorite recipes (besides that secret Beef Wellington)? Pork medallions and pasta primavera.

I’ll report back if I give either of these recipes a try. They’re not crazy enough to become the Capitals’ equivalent of Nationals coach Matt Lecroy’s banana and mayonnaise sandwiches, but perhaps they’ll provide the same sort of luck.
