The Wizards unveiled their first alternate uniforms since 2006 on Tuesday and the response to the navy shorts and jerseys has been mostly positive. With red (home) and white (road) uniforms already in the rotation, it made sense to add a blue as opposed to, say, a black alternate, or even worse, a two-tone look like the one the Wizards wore from 2006to 2009.
Back in 1997, when the former Bullets showed off their new Wizards uniforms, there was talk of adding a black alternate road uniform.
Via former Post staff writer J.A. Adande:
“The uniforms, which are made by Nike, feature the new color scheme of blue, black and bronze. The home uniforms are white with a blue stripe down the left side and the road uniforms are blue with a black stripe. Bronze is used in the trim.
Since the NBA allowed the use of alternative road uniforms in 1994, many teams have come up with secondary uniforms–which, of course, give fans something else to buy.
But to establish new uniforms (and get maximum sales opportunities), teams must wait two seasons before they can introduce the second uniform. Once that deadline passes, the Wizards plan to unveil a black alternative road uniform.
“I just can’t wait to get that black uniform under our belt,” Juwan Howard said. “I’m pushing that black uniform, so we can have three.”
The Wizards never wore the proposed black alternate uniforms, but you can get an idea of what they might have looked like on eBay.
