As I write this, there are more than 80 Jayson Werth garden gnomes listed on eBay. Bidding for one of the little guys, which were given out to the first 25,000 fans at Tuesday’s game, has reached $122.50. Are there gold flecks in Werth’s plastic beard? Not according to the item description, but hey, the free shipping is nice.
An alternative to getting in a bidding war over a Werth gnome that you may come to regret is finding a trade partner. As noticed by a colleague, the author of a post on the Chevy Chase Community Listserv is looking to trade a Denard Span bobblehead for a Werth gnome, and she says the future of the tomatoes in her garden depends on making a deal. Span, while excellent at #Spanning, is apparently not so good at scaring squirrels.
Other fans posted similar trade offers involving the Werth gnome on Craigslist, including one person who offered two Span bobbleheads in exchange for one gnome. (Perhaps he has an especially large vegetable garden. The Listserv poster may need to sweeten the deal by throwing in a box of tomatoes.)
UPDATE: The fan offering the two Span bobbleheads wrote to tell me he will also include some veggies and some homebrew if it will seal the deal. Here’s the updated listing.
Another fan was seeking two Werth gnomes in return for one Abe Lincoln Racing President bobblehead, which would qualify as a Mike Rizzo-like fleecing if you ask me. There’s an Abe bobblehead available for $75 on eBay.
This fan was willing to give up his Bryce Harper bobblehead for a gnome.
Fans who acquired extra gnomes were willing to move them for past Nationals and Orioles giveaways.
These two offers, however, might be the best of all.
