Norfolk Tides will wear ridiculous gnome-themed jerseys Friday

August 13, 2014

We may have reached peak gnome and it’s not the Todd Helton retirement bobblegnome the Rockies will give away on Sunday. One week after Jayson Werth garden gnomes sold for more than $100 on eBay, the Norfolk Tides — the Class AAA affiliate of the Orioles — will wear gnome jerseys on Friday against the Gwinnett Braves.

The team will also give away Ron Johnson gnomes to the first 3,000 fans, but gnome jerseys. Look at these things:

Here’s the explanation, via the Tides:

Since Tides Manager Ron Johnson has been immortalized in gnome form, the Tides will be wearing special gnome-themed jerseys for one night only thanks to PRA Group. The Tides will hold a silent auction during the game, giving fans a chance to bid on these one-of-a-kind jerseys, which will be autographed by the players that wore them. All the proceeds from the auction will benefit United Way South Hampton Roads, so show your support and take home a unique “can’t find it anywhere else” jersey.

In other gnome news, the couple that was looking to acquire a Jayson Werth gnome on the Chevy Chase Listserv to protect their vegetable garden from squirrels e-mailed me earlier this week with an update.

“Happy to report that at last the cute little guy is in my possession. Cost me my extra unopened Span bobblehead, a few tomatoes and cukes and some patty pan squash. No signs of any squirrels so far.”
