Jay Gruden talked at some length about his relationship with his brothers during Comcast SportsNet’s special about his life and career, which debuted this week. The network included some of those thoughts in the clip below; this was the highlight.
“Jim was an excellent student, a straight-A student,” Washington’s coach said of his oldest brother. “Jon was a typical jock, just totally different. Usually Jon was very irritable, and I’ve kind of grown to be that way, too. Like, if you crunch your ice too loud he’ll throw something at you or spit on you in the back of the room as a little kid. If I have an itch, he’ll call me ‘Dog Boy.’
“It was tough, but he was a great big brother to have, because he worked very hard athletically,” Jay Gruden went on. “Both of ‘em. Jim was a great student. So the importance of work, both in the athletic department and in the school department, I got from both of them.”
That’s all sweet, but clearly, the key nugget is Dog Boy.
And also the above photo, which is tremendous.
“Jay Gruden: A New Era,” was a half-hour show based mostly on interviews between Jay Gruden and Chick Hernandez. The 30-minute program — which includes Gruden’s thoughts on coaching RGIII and the pressure of his new gig — also features comments from Phil Simms and Daniel Snyder. It will air again Monday at 6:30 p.m. and Aug. 21 at 9.
