Russia’s recent embargo on produce from the EU in retaliation for sanctions levied against it for its role in the Ukrainian conflict has put Poland’s status as the world’s largest exporter of apples in jeopardy.
In an effort to encourage cider production and consumption in the face of an apple excess, Poland’s Economy Ministry responded by proposing changes to a law that bans advertising on any alcohol other than beer. Meanwhile, the Embassy of Poland solicited Wizards center Marcin Gortat’s help in encouraging people to request Polish apples.
“From my early childhood, I ate a lot of apples,” Gortat says in a new video. “Look how tall I grew. Join me and Mr. Ambassador requesting Polish Freedom Apples. I’m Marcin Gortat from the Washington Wizards.”
It’s only a matter of time before Gortat is marketing Polish cider, right? Tagline: When life gives you apples, make hard cider.
It’s been an eventful few days for Gortat, but what else is new? On Saturday, he drove a Humvee and chauffeured Olympic champion sprinter Usain Bolt into Warsaw’s National Stadium for the LOTTO Kamila Skolimowska Memorial track meet.

Gortat’s caption, in which he refers to Bolt as THE CHAMP, is excellent.
Here we go…. me …driving that big a.. humvee and THE CHAMP seating on tower!!! I was hyped people…. # someCrazySh** #coolDude #partyMaster
And today, Gortat accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge while wearing a familiar T-shirt.
