Barry Donor Goes Home From Hospital

Kim Dickens, the 47-year-old woman who donated a kidney to D.C. Council member Marion Barry (D-Ward 8), has been discharged from Howard University Hospital.

A Howard spokesman said the donor was discharged shortly before noon Tuesday, four days after undergoing a six-hour procedure. Dickens is a District native who has known Barry for more than a decade.

When he told a small group of friends that he needed a kidney, Dickens was among those who got tested. A day after learning she was a match, she called Barry in tears to alert him, a spokeswoman for the council member has said.

Though some media outlets have reported that Barry could go home as early as today, his spokesperson said the former mayor is likely to remain at Howard for several more days.

"One day at a time," Barry said through his spokeswoman Natalie Williams.
