Marion Barry took his seat in the D.C Council chambers this morning for the first time since surgery to receive a new kidney on Feb. 20.
Barry drew applause and then laughter when he assured the audience: "I'd just like to tell everyone that I AM following the doctor's orders."
"Modern medicine has come a long way," said Barry, who added that he would be on anti-rejection medication for the rest of his life.
Barry, who was readmitted to Howard University Hospital for a few days last week for post-surgical complications, was expected to be home longer, but he was clearly restless. He served as honorary coach for the Council's basketball team Monday night at Verizon Center.
