Mayor Adrian M. Fenty's numbers for the proposed 2010 budget:
There will be 776 layoffs and another 398 jobs eliminated through attrition and another 458 vacant jobs eliminated, for a total of 1,632 jobs cut in 2010.
The mayor said 250 of the cuts are for schools, a result of decreased enrollment--mostly cutting teacher aides and support staff.
City administrator Dan Tangherlini said: "These are not gross city-wide layoffs but a programatic-based realignment. ... We're trying to change the dialogue from a plus or minus [staffing] number to ask how these departments are constructed. That's a massive change in how budgeting is done in this city."
Update 1:04 p.m.: Read Fenty's full budget proposal for yourself here. The document is titled "Meeting the Challenge", a bit of a tone change from last year's "Getting the Job Done."
