Calvin Lavonne Woodland, the younger brother of D.C. Council member Jim Graham's chief of staff, was killed Wednesday night in a shooting in the 800 block of Barnaby Place SE.
Woodland, 18, is the son of the late Calvin Woodland Sr., a prominent community activist with deep ties to the local African American community.
Calvin B. Woodland Jr. has worked for Graham (D-Ward 1) since his first election in 1998. In December, Graham promoted him to chief of staff to succeed Ted G. Loza, who has been indicted on bribery charges.
According to a police statement, Calvin Lavonne Woodland was found lying in a parking lot near his home about 10:30 p.m. Woodland, who had been shot multiple times, was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later.
Police are offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information in the case. Graham's office sent an e-mail to council members Thursday morning stating that the Woodland family would hold a vigil Thursday night at 828 Barnaby St. SE starting at 6 p.m.
