Campaign Worker Charged With Robberies

A man recently arrested and charged for a string of robberies in D.C. and a campaign worker who earned more than $5,000 on the campaigns of Adam Clampitt and now Council member Michael A. Brown (I-At Large) last year are one in the same.

Ezra Mathis, 29, was arrested near Potomac and M streets and charged with the Thursday robbery of the Bandolino shoe store in Georgetown. He has also been charged with robbery for a March 1 incident involving a clothing store in the 1500 block of U Street NW and with a Feb. 22 attempted robbery of the City Sports store on Seventh Street NW in the Chinatown area.

Mathis was arrested Friday night.

Brown said he hired Mathis after Clampitt, who dropped out of the at-large race last year and endorsed him. Brown absorbed many people on Clampitt's campaign team.

Brown said Mathis has not been convicted, but he expressed concern for Mathis and "the victims, as well."

"I'm surprised, like everyone else," Brown said. "I didn't have a relationship with him except for my campaign."
