Candidates for mayor and City Council were racing to collect and count campaign checks Tuesday in anticipation of the critical midnight deadline for filing August finance reports. The numbers will reveal how much money Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray have banked for their final sprint to the Sept. 14 Democratic primary.
In e-mail pleas to supporters, Gray asks for help as he braces for Fenty's "imminent deluge of negative television advertisements" and offers bumper stickers and a "limited edition" retro T-shirt for those who donate $50 or more.
Fenty's e-mail countdown to today's deadline touches on his theme of "moving forward" and fending off a "return to the mismanaged government of the 90s."
In the first three months of the campaign, Gray collected $561,000 - far less than the $4.2 million Fenty has amassed since he began running for reelection in 2008. But in a boost to Gray's supporters, the chairman surpassed Fenty's three-month take of $475,000.
