Education activists have made lots of noise this budget season about what they consider a lack of transparency in how Mayor Adrian Fenty's administration proposes to spend dollars in the 140 schools next year.
Today D.C. Council members likely will address some of the as-yet unanswered questions at two hearings. In the morning, they will query Deputy Mayor for Education Victor Reinoso on his $6.9 million proposal. And in the afternoon, they will quiz Allen Lew, executive director of the Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization, about his $54 million proposal.
Council members are likely to ask Reinoso about whether an ombudsman who reports to him is having success in solving problems for parents and the type of initiatives a commission of city agency heads is working on to help improve schools. Reinoso plans this month to introduce a program, run by the commission, that will offer at-home support to families of troubled students.
Watch for council members to grill Lew for details on plans to spend the $1 billion school modernization fund and renovate more than 20 schools that will receive students from buildings that are closing.
