Current newspapers endorse Gray

The Current, which publishes several newspapers in Northwest, has endorsed D.C. Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray in the Sept. 14 Democratic primary.

The editorial board of The Current, an influential publication that focuses on neighborhood news, wrote Wednesday that it had a difficult time choosing between Gray and incumbent Adrian M. Fenty (D). But the board ultimately selected Gray, delivering a potentially major boost to the chairman as he seeks to remain competitive with Fenty in Northwest.

"In the end, these distasteful elements of Mayor Fenty's record propel us to endorse Mr. Gray," the board wrote, referring to some of the ethical controversies that have dogged the administration.

The board stressed it supports School Chancellor Michelle Rhee and school reform, but concluded voters should not base their decision on Rhee alone.

"Though education is a major concern, this is not an election for chancellor, but for mayor," the editorial states. "And both candidates have shown a commitment to the issue: Mayoral control of the school system might not exist but for Mr. Gray's success in winning approval of the reform legislation."
