D.C. Council's Retired Lawyer is Busier Than Ever

Charlotte Brookins-Hudson retired in January 2007 after more than four terms as the general counsel for the D.C. Council, but she is anything but retired.

Brookins-Hudson has started another career. She is senior strategy adviser to the PreK For All DC Campaign, an organization that helped Chairman Vincent Gray craft the legislation he introduced late last year. The bill, scheduled for a second reading next month, received preliminary approval April 1.

But working to improve education for the District's youngest residents is not all Brookins-Hudson is doing. In January, she became a visiting professor at the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law. She was already a visiting lecturer on the legislative process; now she's the professor of the Legislation Clinic.

And she also happens to be the president of the Hardy Middle School PTA.

In recognition of her years as a public servant both for the District and the federal government, she was selected as the recipient of the 2008 Beatrice Rosenberg Award for Excellence in Government Service by the D. C. Bar. Brookins-Hudson is the first person in the legislative branch of District government to receive the award.

The award recognizes a D.C. Bar member who had demonstrated outstanding professional judgment throughout long-term government careers, mentored young government lawyers and devoted time to public service.

"I am proud and honored to have been a government lawyer for 30 years and to be named as the 2008 recipient of the Beatrice Rosenberg Award," Brookins-Hudson said. "Beatrice Rosenberg was a government lawyer who served as a mentor to many lawyers. I have tried to model my government service after her and many other lawyers like her."
