D.C. Republicans: No More "Fenty Field"

The D.C. Republican Party is calling on Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) to immediately remove his name from the new turf soccer field at Harriet Tubman Elementary in Columbia Heights.

"The administration has essentially created a Fenty Field," Robert J. Kabel, the chairman of the D.C. Republican committee, said in a statement. "When did renovating a sports field for D.C. Kids take a back seat to the mayor's full throttle of self promotion? If the new field is really for kids, the Mayor should remove his name from the field immediately."

As DC Wire noted Monday, the $558,000 field features artificial turf, safety padding, bleacher-style seating for 250 spectators, a wrought iron fence, team bleachers and soccer goals with new netting. In the center of the field, Fenty's name and a logo stretches for about 30 yards, making it easier for spectators to remember who was mayor when it was built.

City leaders have defended the logo, noting it will also be used for community events. But, as first reported today by Tom Sherwood of NBC 4, some area residents say they have been given mixed signals about whether they will be able to use the field.
