District seeks public input on playground improvement project

The District Department of Parks and Recreation will continue a series of community meetings Wednesday night to get public feedback on a $30 million project to improve 32 playgrounds around the city by summer 2013.

DPR began meeting with residents, including the children who will slide and swing on equipment, earlier this month. But Mayor Vincent C. Gray and Jesus Aguirre, DPR director, publicized what has been dubbed “Play DC” at the mayor’s bi-weekly news conference held at Hillcrest Recreation Center in Southeast Wednesday.

Aguirre said meetings have been well-attended so far, but the city is seeking a broader base of potential users of the playgrounds, which he said will stretch beyond jungle gyms and swing sets and into “play spaces” for all ages. “It really isn’t just about children going up and own the slide,” Aguirre said.

For example, he said, a play space may include typical playground equipment but would be coupled with workout equipment for adults.

The series of meetings is scheduled to end Dec. 20, but the outreach is just part of the first phase. The second phase will be a second series of meetings where architects will present renderings of the play spaces to residents, city officials said. “I think we touch virtually every community...at record speed,” Gray (D) said.

Aguirre said the city wanted to also have a “clear” and “transparent” process to choose which and how playgrounds would be renovated. A scorecard is based on criteria, such as the population of residents under 18 within a quarter-mile of a space.

Citizens unable to attend the meetings can still give the city feedback through an online survey.

Residents of wards 8 and 1 will have an opportunity to discuss the playgrounds at Oxon Run Park and Banneker and Harrison recreation centers at meetings from 6 to 7 :30 p.m. Wednesday at Southeast Tennis & Learning Center and at Banneker.
