It will be a day of partying Saturday on the D.C. campaign trail.
D.C. Council member Kwame Brown (D-At large), a candidate for council chairman, plans to hit 10 gay bars in six hours Saturday night in a bar crawl sponsored by the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club.
Brown, who participated in a similar tour during his 2008 race for council, will stop at bars in Dupont Circle, Capitol Hill, Southwest and Southeast from 9 p.m. until closing time.
Brown is even scheduled to stop at a male strip club, Ziegfeld's/Secrets on Half St. SW.
(Update 8:30 p.m - Jeffrey D.Richardson, president of the Gertrude Stein Club, called D.C. Wire to clarify Brown will not be attending Secrets nigthclub. Richardson said "an intern mistakenly included Secrets" on Brown's schedule.)
In June, the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club endorsed Brown in his bid against former council member Vincent Orange.
While Brown tries to woo gay men and lesbians, Council chairman Vincent C. Gray (D) and Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) will be battling over the go-go vote in the mayoral race.
In effort to match Fenty's recent push to win over fans of the District's home-grown genre, the Gray campaign is holding a four-hour "community rally" Saturday afternoon at Oxun Run Park in Southeast. The event will feature "food, music" and "voter-registration on site," according to a flier advertising the event.
Fenty, meanwhile, plans to hit three different go-go events Saturday, according to Fenty strategist Ronald Moten, who used to work as a go-go promoter. The Fenty campaign will host an event in the Saratoga neighborhood in Northeast. The mayor also plans to hit community events featuring go-go bands at Emery Recreation Center and Barry Farms, Moten said.
